Cablevision rolls out interactive WiFi channel

Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) is stepping up efforts to market its expanding network of WiFi hot spots in the New York metropolitan area, launching a dedicated digital cable channel designed to help its high-speed data customers find indoor and outdoor WiFi access points.

Optimum WiFi channel

Cablevision's Optimum WiFi channel helps subscribers locate WiFi hotspots.

Located on channel 910 on its iO TV lineup, its Optimum WiFi Channel has localized and expandable maps. It also features several tutorials designed to show subscribers how to access its WiFi hotspots.

Using WiFi gear from Canada's BelAir Networks, Cablevision has built WiFi hotspots at thousands of public areas New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, including central business districts, coffee shops, train stations, parks and beaches. It is relying on WiFi to help differentiate itself from rival Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ), which doesn't offer its FiOS Internet customers free WiFi access.

Cablevision has also teamed up with Time Warner Cable  (NYSE: TWC) and Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) in the New York metropolitan area to share the costs of building WiFi access points.
