Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) and Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) are using their joint innovation lab to develop "magical experiences" for cable subscribers using mobile devices, the MSO said in a recent job listing.
"The Mobility Solutions team is pioneering Comcast's strategy to enable new products and services outside the home on a myriad of mobile devices. As part of this quest, we're overseeing Comcast's innovation joint venture with Verizon Wireless, with the goal of delivering magical experiences that move seamlessly across all your digital devices," Comcast wrote in the job listing for a "director of product management mobility solution" at its headquarters in Philadelphia.
The cable MSO and Verizon Wireless formed a joint innovation lab last year that was created after it agreed to sell broadband wireless spectrum to the mobile phone provider. Comcast, Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC), Bright House Networks and Cox Communications have also signed joint marketing deals with Verizon Wireless that allow subscribers who order new cable and mobile phone products to receive discounts and prepaid debit cards.
In November, Comcast CFO Michael Angelakis said engineers from Comcast and Verizon were developing new products that will take advantage of its digital cable platform and the Verizon Wireless network and devices. "I don't think you'll see any announcements. I think you'll see us go out and try to execute," Angelakis said at a Wells Fargo conference.
Comcast and Verizon haven't yet detailed the products that they are developing at the innovation lab in Silicon Valley. Their work could include technology that would allow Comcast subscribers to pause programming that they are watching through a TV connected to a Comcast set-top or gateway device and resume playing the video on a Verizon Wireless smartphone or tablet.
Verizon Wireless also lists several new jobs related to new video products on its job website, but it's not clear if the positions are also connected to the joint innovation lab. The company recently posted a job listing for a senior engineer of product development. "The Verizon Wireless Multimedia Technology team is chartered with architecting and delivering the next generation of consumer video for mobile (and other screens). This particular engineering assignment will work with all of the major Hollywood content studios. They will design the entire ecosystem for a brand new product," Verizon wrote in the job listing.
Asked to comment on the job listing, Verizon Wireless spokeswoman Debra Lewis told FierceCable, "We're always in the market for the best talent around lots of opportunities and all of our job postings reflect that." A Comcast spokesman didn't respond to a request for comment about its Mobility Solutions job listing.
