Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) is developing a public affairs program called KidKlout that may address issues ranging from bullying and domestic violence to the dangers of distracted driving, according to a trademark application it filed on Dec. 14.
KidKlout will focus on "charitable services, namely, promoting public awareness of bullying, peer victimization, harassment and cyberbullying by, of and among children," according to the application. The program may also address "poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy and homelessness among children; child abuse and domestic violence against children; the sexual exploitation of children; child sex trafficking, childhood prostitution and child pornography; the importance and benefits of physical, nutritional, social and emotional youth health and wellness; the need for public service, volunteerism and community involvement by and among children," Comcast said.
The KidKlout trademark application was filed on Dec. 14, the day of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. But the timing of the filing was likely a coincidence. The domain name KidKlout.com was registered anonymously through GoDaddy.com's Domains by Proxy service on Nov. 1, according to Network Solutions.
Comcast officials didn't respond to a request for comment about KidKlout on Wednesday.
As the largest cable MSO and owner of NBCUniversal, Comcast can reach tens of millions of viewers through public affairs programs such as KidKlout. In the last two years, Comcast has increased its public affairs programs at schools nationwide. The MSO said in July that it had awarded $2 million in scholarships to high school seniors through its "Leaders and Achievers" program. It launched an Internet Essentials program last year in which it offers broadband connections to low-income families for $9.95 monthly.
