Cox, Cisco to unveil new 'second screen experience' at CES

Top executives from Cox Communications and Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) said they plan to unveil a new "second screen experience" late Monday during an event at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The move follows the launch in December of a new version of Cox's Trio interactive program guide which suggests TV shows and movies to subscribers based on their viewing habits.

"It's all about how Cox is making video personal. We're going to show the personal recommendations we launched recently, but will also reveal a second screen experience that no one has seen before and will be available to Cox customers this year," Cox spokesman Todd Smith told FierceCable Monday.

Cox president Pat Esser and Cisco president John Chambers will unveil the new product during a press event in Las Vegas that has been scheduled for 4:45 p.m., Cox said.

In December, Cox said it partnered with Cisco to develop the new version of the Trio guide, which incorporates a recommendation engine from ThinkAnalytics.

Cox rival Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) launched a new Explorer remote control app for the iPad on Monday. In addition to working with Cox to develop similar second-screen apps, Cisco may be able to help Cox deliver cable programming to connected TVs and other devices without using a set-top. Kip Compton, CTO of Cisco's Video and Collaboration Group, told FierceCable last year that the company's $5 billion acquisition of NDS would give it software that Cisco's cable customers could use to deliver content to connected TVs.

"We're living in this duality right now where service providers want to deliver to the consumers' devices, which may be smart or connected TVs, as well as tablets, PCs, mobile phones and so forth, but still have large installed bases of set-top boxes that they also need to bring into that service mix. So NDS's software solutions enable us to help service providers deliver content and services to set-tops they already have, set-tops they may buy as well as this class of devices that consumers may buy--either the connected TV or something else," Compton said.
