DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV) became the latest TV service provider to finally start taking the TV Everywhere concept literally, as the satellite TV company quietly launched an update to its iPad TV viewing application this week that allows users to watch some limited programming outside of their DirecTV-serviced homes. However, the upgrade does not support live TV viewing outside the home.
The DirecTV iPad app, like many others, offered limited TV streaming to the iPad last year, as long as customers remained under their own roofs connected to their home receivers. Now, with DirecTV Everywhere, customers can view OnDemand content from premium movie channels and from DirecTV's own AudienceNetwork.
DirecTV is taking baby steps here, and the real news will come as it expands the app further to support more TV viewing outside the home.
