HBO said it signed a six-year extension on an agreement to use streaming video optimization technology from Conviva for its HBO Go and Max Go mobile video applications and TV Everywhere websites.
Conviva's investors include HBO parent Time Warner (NYSE: TWX), so landing the HBO contract is not a surprise. Customers of the San Mateo, Calif.-based firm include Time Warner's Turner Broadcasting subsidiary, ESPN, AEG Digital Media, Vevo and NBC.
HBO began using Conviva's video optimization technology, which is designed to help viewers avoid interruptions from buffering, in 2011.
"HBO viewers expect a high-quality viewing experience regardless of device or location," HBO SVP of digital products Otto Berkes said in a prepared statement. He said the network was drawn to Conviva's "leadership in real-time stream optimization."
