Verizon shifts top FiOS execs to Redbox Instant team

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) has reassigned the leadership team that built its FiOS-TV platform to the streaming video joint-venture it plans to launch later this year with Coinstar's (Nasdaq: CSTR) Redbox division.

Among those reassigned was Shawn Strickland, named CEO of the joint venture.

Verizon and Redbox said Tuesday that the streaming-video company will be called Redbox Instant by Verizon. FierceCable first reported in February that Redbox had trademarked the brand Redbox Instant for the streaming video venture.

In addition to Strickland, who was VP of consumer strategy and planning at Verizon, the joint venture's leadership will include Joe Ambeault, who had been director of product development and management for FiOS TV. Verizon and Redbox said that Ambeault will be product line strategist and business manager for the joint venture.

Verizon said that Jack Gallagher, who was formerly an executive director in its technology office, will be CTO of Redbox Instant by Verizon. Former Verizon executive director Pete Castleton was named VP of business development, and former FiOS manager of product development Tina Altman was named director of operations.

The only Redbox veteran named to the joint-venture leadership team is Amy Gibby, a former SVP of marketing at Redbox, who was named chief marketing officer.

Redbox and Verizon have kicked off an alpha trial for the streaming-video venture. Redbox spokeswoman Kate Brennan said the service is expected to launch later this year. The companies haven't yet detailed the content that it will offer, or how it will be priced.

But Coinstar said in an SEC filing earlier this year that the joint venture will have the "primary purpose of developing, launching, marketing and operating nationwide 'over-the-top' video distribution services providing consumers with access to video programming content, including linear content, delivered via broadband networks to video-enabled viewing devices and offering rental of physical DVDs and Blu-ray Discs from DVD rental kiosks."
