Google Fiber TV disappoints in Kansas City, but will spur innovation in cable industry

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Google teased consumers in Kansas City, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo., Thursday by unveiling a Google Fiber TV product that will come with advanced features such as the ability to change channels with voice controls. But the Internet giant won't pose a threat to incumbents Time Warner Cable and AT&T anytime soon, as it is only beginning to gauge which parts of the cities it will offer its $120 monthly cable TV service, which will also offer high-speed Internet access at speeds of up to 1 gigabyte per second.

Supplying subscribers with free Nexus 7 tablets to use as a remote control will help differentiate Google Fiber TV from Time Warner Cable's digital cable and AT&T's U-verse TV services, as will its faster Internet service. But Google isn't revolutionizing the pay-TV business. Comcast, Cablevision, DirecTV, Time Warner Cable and other major multichannel providers already offer apps for Apple iOS and Google Android devices that turn the mobile devices into cable remotes.

What about the Google Fiber TV gateway device, which comes with 2 terabytes of storage and will let subscribers record up to eight TV shows simultaneously? Big deal. Dish Network and TiVo already sell DVRs that can store 2 TB. The biggest difference with the Google DVR is that it comes with eight tuners, compared to the four that come with the TiVo Premiere DVR and the six tuners in Dish's Hopper multiroom DVR and the X1 gateway that Pace has manufactured for Comcast. But does anyone really need to record six TV shows at the same time, let alone eight? Read more of this Editor's Corner online.

1. EchoStar looks to capture images of viewer reactions to programming

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

EchoStar (Nasdaq: SATS) is studying ways to use cameras and microphones attached to set-tops to capture how viewers react to memorable events such as a touchdown in an NFL game or a scary scene in a horror movie, according to a recent patent application.

Click here to enlarge the patent-application image.

The patent, titled "systems and methods for memorializing a viewer's viewing experience with captured viewer images," details how triggers could be embedded in a programming stream to capture images of viewers. Those images could be stored on a DVR or another media device, EchoStar says.

"Viewers of programming typically have unique, personal experiences when viewing programming presented on a media presentation device, such as a television, personal computer, or the like. In some situations the viewer would, for a variety of reasons, like to remember their reactions to their viewing of the programming," EchoStar wrote in its patent application, which was filed in March and published July 19 by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.

The EchoStar approach is similar to the way Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) captures photos of consumers that play games on Xbox consoles equipped with Kinect cameras, and displays the images at the end of the game. It may also remind some viewers of the way that many amusement parks shoot photos of customers on roller coasters, and allow people to buy those photos at the conclusion of their ride.

One of the biggest challenges EchoStar faces in commercializing the patent is activating the set-top cameras and microphones at the correct moment in order to capture an image and audio of a viewer during a memorable moment. EchoStar notes in the patent that triggers could be added to live sports programming by automatically capturing an image of a viewer when a goal is scored.

"A device may automatically generate and embed an event capture trigger into the program stream. For example, a scoring detection device may generate and embed an event capture trigger in response to detecting the score in the sporting event," EchoStar wrote.

Viewers would be able to access images captured during programming on their TVs and other devices, EchoStar said. The company explained, in its filing, how the technology could be used by a parent to create slideshows of images of their children watching a movie, and share those images with grandparents.

"The grandmother may choose to view a presentation of the children's movie. As the children's movie is being presented, the event capture triggers cause presentation of the corresponding captured images (and optional audio recordings) of their grandchild. Thus, the grandparent can share in the grandchild's viewing experiences at a later time and location," EchoStar writes in the patent.

Officials at EchoStar, which manufactures set-tops for Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH), declined to comment on the patent application. A Dish Network spokesman didn't respond to a request for comment.

The patent lists EchoStar engineering manager Nicholas Newell as the inventor.

While it's not clear how soon EchoStar could develop a commercial product based on the patent, it's an example of technology that could be used by Dish Network to differentiate itself from DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV), Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) and other cable rivals.

2. Comcast to spend $170M on 'Awesome' Xfinity branding campaign

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Five weeks after trademarking the slogan "The Future of Awesome," Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) plans to kick off an ad campaign for its Xfinity brand during the London Olympics opening ceremony Friday night.

Comcast will spend at least $170 million on the branding campaign, according to The Wall Street Journal. The campaign will feature ads that touting Comcast's range of Xfnity products, including multiplatform programming from the Olympics and its Xfinity Home security and home-automation service. One of the ads contains the tagline, "this is easy, this is simple, this is awesome," according to WSJ.

The nation's largest cable MSO, in 2010, began using the Xfinity brand for its digital cable, cable modem, phone and Internet video services. It has increased its marketing budget to tout its Xfinity products, shelling out $482.7 million on advertising during the first quarter, according ot Kantar Media.

3. Cox rolls mosaic channel to cover Olympics

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Cox Communications Inc. launched a mosaic channel that will offer subscribers feeds from six NBCUniversal networks covering the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

source: Cox

Its NBC Olympic Spotlight channel features a grid displaying programming from NBC, NBC Sports Network, MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo and Telemundo.

Several pay-TV providers have used mosaic guides to display multiple video feeds during previous Olympics, including Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH), Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) and DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV).

Cox is offering the interactive channel to its advanced TV subscribers that have access to its Trio interactive program guide. The MSO also uses mosaic guides to display multiple networks on its Kidz Zone, News Zone and Sports Zone channels. Technology vendors Harmonic, Rovi (Nasdaq: ROVI) and NDS worked with Cox to develop the zone channels, said Cox spokeswoman Amy Quinn.

4. FCC's Connect America Funding initiative leaves 13 states in the cold

By Sean Buckley Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

The Federal Communications Commission released a map Thursday illustrating what states will benefit from the first phase of its Connect America Fund (CAF) and the glaring reality that the agency plan won't address 13 states.

States not getting funding include: Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, New Jersey, Massachusetts, New Hampshire Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

Alternatively, Wisconsin is leading the funding charge with $38 million.

Recipients of the funding, including a number of large service providers such as CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL), FairPoint Communications (Nasdaq: FRP), and Frontier Communications (Nasdaq: FTR), have either accepted portions or all of the funding made available to them via CAF Phase I. These service providers have three years to use the funds to build out broadband services in "unserved" areas.

"As our new map demonstrates, millions of Americans still live, work, and travel in rural areas where access to high-speed Internet does not exist," FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said in a statement. "Through the FCC's Connect America Fund initiatives, we're helping complete our nation's broadband infrastructure, which will lead to job creation, economic growth, and innovation in the 21st century. The map is the latest example of how the agency can use mapping technology to spur innovation and to develop new products for the public."

The FCC's map shows the 37 states where service providers will deploy broadband service as a result of the first phase of the Connect America Fund. In addition to breaking down how much funding each state is getting and how many counties and census blocks are being served, the FCC map shows how many people are unserved, which the FCC defines as those who can't get at least a 3 Mbps/768Kbps connection.

While the CAF Phase I program is promising, it's far from perfect with some service providers such as CenturyLink and Windstream (Nasdaq: WIN) opting to only take a portion of the funding due to various restrictions proposed in the initial program. Meanwhile, AT&T (NYSE: T) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ), despite being eligible to get $47.8 and $19.7 million, respectively, decided to not participate.

5. Hallmark grows subscriber-fee revenue by 10 percent in Q2 2012

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel generated $19.9 million in subscription fees from cable- and satellite-TV affiliates during the second quarter, up 10 percent compared to this time last year, according to parent company Crown Media (Nasdaq: CRWN).

The company reported it generated $86.7 million in revenue during the second quarter, with advertising revenue growing 15 percent, to $66.5 million.

Crown Media posted gains in advertising and subscription revenue. Moreover, programming expenses decreased by 5 percent during the quarter to $34.5 million, thanks to "the expiration of a number of programming license agreements."

Hallmark Channel focuses on family-friendly programming. Its schedule includes repeats of Frasier and Cheers, and a daytime program called Home and Family.

Crown generated $13.5 million (4 cents per share) in net income during the second quarter, up from $12.1 million (3 cents per share) during the same period last year.

SPOTLIGHT ON... Tracking cable's Q2 performance

FierceCable put together a special report tracking the performance of cable- and satellite-TV providers, technology vendors and programmers. The second quarter is traditionally a volatile period for pay-TV distributors, as many college students cancel service at the end of the school year. While Cablevision and Charter Communications both posted subscriber gains during the first quarter, the MSOs face challenges sustaining that growth during Q2. We'll update our Q2 report, which already includes the results from Verizon and AT&T, each day. Read more
