Though some pundits believe the end of the set-top box is nigh, these devices still have plenty of life left in them. The challenge is to keep STBs on pace with encroaching technologies that are becoming more ubiquitous in subscriber homes. Hence, the market has seen traditional STBs become mostly IP-based gateway devices, with wireless technology on board, improved electronic program guides, broadband capabilities, extra tuners, and more streamlined, energy-efficient designs.
