Converged Cable Access Platform - Top cable technologies in 2013
Last year, CableLabs introduced a Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP) spec that combines cable modem termination systems and the delivery of traditional QAM channels in a single platform.
Several technology vendors are pitching cable operators CCAP products, including Arris, Casa Systems, Cisco, Harmonic and Motorola Mobility. While these are early days for the CCAP, the platform is expected to help cable operators transition their networks to support the delivery of IP video.
CCAP generated some buzz at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo in Orlando, where Arris and Harmonic unveiled CCAP products. Arris launched its E6000 Converged Edge Router, which the company said will help operators maximize bandwidth. Harmonic said its CCAP product and optical transmitters will help cable operators migrate toward an all-IP infrastructure and reduce expenses, power usage and rack space at cable headend facilities.
