Broadcom builds 5G Wi-Fi chips
Broadcom took the wraps off a new line of 5G Wi-Fi computer chips that the company says could allow service providers to deliver wireless video and data to consumers at speeds that will be three times faster than Internet connections offered through current Wi-Fi chips contained in routers and set-tops.
The company said Thursday that it has received support from Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Motorola Mobility (NYSE: MMI) and other technology companies, but it didn't say when the first 5G WiFi chips will be deployed. Broadcom says the chips could allow consumers to watch HD-quality video on multiple devices in a home simultaneously.
With Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision and other distributors relying more on WiFi technology to power home networks and Wi-Fi hotspots, Broadcom's product could help operators handle demand for mobile video and data services. Operators may be able to use Wi-Fi gear containing 5G chips to market faster services than those offered by a competing provider.
Broadcom said it plans to show off the 5G chips next week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
