Cable joins content's Copyright Alerts team

Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) , Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) and Cablevision Systems (NYSE: CVC) are among the cable TV companies that have joined with other broadband ISPs to back a new Copyrights Alert system, the content industry's latest effort to combat excessive illegal downloading and file sharing.

The new system calls for ISPs to send warning alerts to customers engaging in the activity, and after a certain number of alerts to take so-called "mitigation measures" such as throttling down the user's Internet access speed or redirecting them to an alternate landing page.

The major service providers have always been hesitant to be the content industry's muscle, so it will be interesting to see how far they take this effort.
