Major cable MSOs have launched a Facebook app that encourages subscribers to "like" movies that they watch on cable video-on-demand platforms.

The app was developed by cable pay-per-view and VOD content distributor In Demand, and is being marketed by CTAM, the cable marketing group that is backed by Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC), Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR), Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) and other major cable MSOs. It marks one of the cable industry's first efforts to use social media to drive programming sales.

CTAM is also running a sweepstakes promotion through the Movies On Demand Facebook app, where it will give daily prizes of $5 in "cable cash" that can be used for renting cable VOD movies. It will also award a 46-inch 3DTV to a grand prize winner.
