Cable One loses 23,000 subs in Q3 2011

Cable One lost 23,000 basic-video subscribers during the third quarter, according to parent company The Washington Post Co. (NYSE: WPO), which reported earnings Friday.

The 10th largest cable MSO, which operates in Arizona, New Mexico and 17 other states, ended the quarter with 627,659 basic video customers. It picked up more than 31,000 high-speed Internet customers, growing its cable modem customer base to 448,143. And Cable One signed nearly 39,000 phone customers, growing its base to 176,527.

Cable One is seeing similar subscriber trends to larger cable MSOs Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC), Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) and Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR), which have also reported growth in high-speed Internet customers while losing basic video subscribers.

The Washington Post Co. said revenue from its cable division declined slightly during the third quarter to $187.9 million, which it blamed on the decrease in basic video customers.
