Cablevision expands social media efforts while Charter cuts Twitter support

Two new feeds focus on information, customer support

Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) is recruiting executives to help it use Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms to promote its Optimum products and to respond to complaints from subscribers.

Earlier this month, Cablevision began advertising three new social media positions: director of social media, social media editor and social media analyst. The executive it hires for the director of social media position will be "responsible for developing and overseeing the execution of strategic social media initiatives, including developing and managing social media campaigns to grow the audience, creating and supervising high-profile channel accounts, and integrating social media into the overall business strategy," Cablevision said in a listing posted on its Cablevision Jobs & Careers site.

Cablevision's expanded social media efforts come as Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR), which is run by former Cablevision COO Tom Rutledge, has scaled back its social media operations. The MSO said earlier this month that it would stop responding to subscribers that use Twitter to communicate with it, and that it would reassign staffers that worked in its social media department.

"Charter will no longer have a customer care team tasked, specifically, with resolving matters raised on social media," Charter Social Media Manager Eric Ketzer wrote in a Twitter post on Dec. 10. Charter's social media moves were first reported by DSL Reports.

Cablevision has expanded its social media presence since it re-launched its Optimum brand this fall. The MSO has internal staffers assigned 24/7 to respond to subscribers, a spokesman told FierceCable Thursday. Cablevision has two Twitter feeds: @Optimum, which focuses on information about its Optimum products, and @OptimumHelp, which focuses on customer service.
