CableLabs has approved Cablevision Systems' (NYSE: CVC) own alternative to CableCARD as an option in its OpenCable/tru2way specifications, according to Light Reading Cable. The Open Media Security option is being used by Cablevision on top of tru2way, within its Samsung set-top boxes and along with its NDS conditional access system.

The cable TV operator may end up acting as the licensing authority for OMS, which reportedly is being looked at by other operators as the industry considers alternatives to the much-maligned CableCARD standard. However, they may need to obtain conditional waivers from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to deploy OMS.
