French pay TV distributor Canal Plus plans to fold its 3D network on Jan. 24, after it managed to sign just 20,000 subscribers in the 18 months since its debut in June 2010.

A Canal Plus spokesperson told Variety that the company saw a "lack of enthusiasm among subscribers" for 3D programs.

The move could be viewed as a small setback for programmers developing movies and TV series in 3D. But no U.S. network has bailed on 3D technology, including ESPN 3D, Discovery's (Nasdaq: DISCA) n3D or DirecTV's (Nasdaq: DTV) 3net.
