Charter, One Economy shovel bucks into digital divide

It's not exactly like tearing down the Berlin Wall and it certainly doesn't replace a national broadband policy with 100 megabits downloads guaranteed to every American, but Charter Communications and One Economy are doing their part to fill in the digital divide for low income residents in St. Louis.

Charter said it will provide about $700,000 in high-speed Internet service, modems and training in collaboration with One Economy, a global non-profit that helps low income people understand and use technology. The St. Louis deal will cover about 1,000 households with free Internet.

The program will officially launch later this month and will use cooperation from local partners to select the participants and provide the equipment.
