Clearwire-Comcast-Sprint trio expand D.C. WiMAX footprint

Recently resurgent Clearwire (Nasdaq: CLWR), which just inked a $1 billion wholesale deal with Sprint, has now teamed with Sprint and one of its other three cable partners, Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), to expand coverage and capacity in its Washington, D.C. footprint.

The service will use Clearwire's WiMAX network and be offered by several operator-dependent names to 288,067 more people in the D.C. metro area. CLEAR 4G service is offered by Clearwire itself while Sprint brings Sprint 4G and Comcast calls its offering Xfinity Internet 2go.

The expansion is the first since Clearwire launched in the D.C. market in 2010 and can be seen as an indicator that Comcast, which has been unwilling to send any more investment money Clearwire's way, has not abandoned the 4G service. Clearwire, in a news release, said that 2.81 million consumers within the metro area can now access its WiMAX-based offerings.
