Adding a managed IP PBX element to its voice services is an aggressive move by Cox Business to match and one-up competitive telecom offerings to small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) "many of which have limited in-house IT resources," the MSO said in a release announcing availablility of the solution.

A managed IP PBX will give these smaller businesses with less than 100 employees "advanced communications capabilities" in-house that frees them to "allocate resources to core business activities," Kristine Faulkner, vice president of product development and management for Cox Business said in the news release.

The Cox IP PBX is based on Cisco's Small Business Communications System and monitors the SMB's voice services to anticipate and repair problems "often before the customer recognizes" there's something amiss, the news release said. Among the other features are five networked locations with four-digital dialing and no long distance charges, a PC-integrated toolbar and a soft phone for employees working remotely.
