Cox Communications was the leading revenue generator for its parent company, Cox Enterprises, in 2009. The cable group accounted for $9 billion of $14.7 billion that privately held Cox Enterprises reported.

On the down side, Cox Enterprises reported its first loss in recent memory, a whopping half million dollars from 2008 to 2009. Privately held Cox rarely releases financial information but does "take a long term view," chairman Jim Kennedy and President-CEO Jimmy Hayes said in prepared comments. "Our future is bright."

During the year Cox Enterprises took its only publicly traded company, Cox Radio, private to "better focus on the long-term growth interests of all Cox businesses," the two executives said.
