Cox uses MPEG-4 to expand HD lineup
Cox Communications plans to use MPEG-4 technology to add up to 30 HDTV networks to its channel lineups in several markets, but the company said only about 10 percent of the set-tops that it has deployed in digital subscriber homes are capable of receiving programming delivered in MPEG-4.
Relying on set-tops from Motorola Mobility (NYSE: MMI) and Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO), Cox will be able to use the increased compression capability offered by MPEG-4 to delivery more HD channels to subscribers. Rival AT&T (NYSE: T) also uses MPEG-4 to delivery programming to its U-verse TV customers.
Cox plans to expand its HD programming lineup in markets where it offers its Advanced TV Plus tier, including New England, San Diego, Oklahoma, Kansas, Omaha, Neb., and Hampton Roads, Va.
