DirecTV lands exclusive rights to premiere Mel Gibson's 'Get the Gringo'
DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV) struck a unique deal with controversial actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson to premiere his "Get the Gringo" movie exclusively in satellite TV homes.
Under the agreement with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, DirecTV will be able to premiere the R-rated action movie on May 1. The company plans to charge pay-per-view and video-on-demand subscribers $10.99 to watch the movie, which Fox will sell on DVD, Blu-ray disc and other digital and pay TV platforms later this year.
The deal gives DirecTV some exclusive content that it could help it recruit and retain subscribers. It also helps Gibson, who has faced charges of domestic abuse and discrimination, avoid the challenge convincing movie theater owners to distribute the movie widely.
