ESPN, Fox News top Beta survey in perceived value

ESPN topped Beta Research Corp.'s latest cable operator survey, with affiliates placing a perceive value of 82 cents per month per subscriber on the all-sports network.

The fee that Beta said ESPN is worth is far less than the network actually charges affiliates. The average pay TV provider pays $5.15 monthly per subscriber to carry ESPN, according to SNL Kagan.

Beta ranked ESPN2 second in perceived value, with the 102 operators it surveyed saying it is worth 52 cents monthly per subscriber. The Deuce was followed by Fox News Channel (47 cents); Disney Channel and NFL Network (42 cents each); Discovery Channel (41 cents); CNN (39 cents); USA Network (38 cents); TNT (37 cents); TBS (36 cents); and HGTV and History (35 cents each).

Disney ESPN Media Networks also led all cable programmers in terms of their ability to help operators sell bundles of high-speed Internet service, HDTV and/or video-on-demand programming. Beta said 71 percent of cable affiliates said DEMN is "very helpful" in selling bundles. It was followed by Discovery Networks and NBC Universal (50 percent); NFL Network (46 percent); Fox Cable Networks (42 percent); Turner Broadcasting (42 percent); and Scripps Networks (40 percent).

Beta said its survey was based on telephone surveys it conducted with cable operators between August and November 2012. The firm said 84 percent of the survey respondents had 10,000 or more subscribers, and that 39 percent had more than 200,000 subscribers.
