Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR) CTO and Operations EVP Marwan Fawaz has unexpectedly left the company to "pursue other opportunities," Charter said in a news release. Fawaz follows former EVP Operations and Marketing Ted Schremp as recently departed Charter executives.

The move was unexpected because Charter is pushing ahead hard to catch up with the rest of the industry deploying DOCSIS 3.0 and Fawaz, who has been with the MSO since 2008, had developed tight relationships at CableLabs. As CTO, Fawaz was "instrumental in developing Charter's next generation strategy and launching DOCSIS 3.0 and switched digital video across the majority of our footprint," Charter President-CEO Mike Lovett said in a news release.

At the same time Fawaz was going out the door, Don Detampel was moving up the corporate ladder by adding the title executive vice president-technology to his current position of EVP and president of commercial services. In his new job Detampel, who joined the company last October, will add responsibilities for product development, network operations engineering and information technology. Additionally, Charter said former Cox CTO Chris Bowick will "provide advisory services as Charter's interim chief technology officer during the transition period."
