Cable operators fretting over the loss of basic TV subscribers got some heartening news from a Centris research report that said 51 percent of pay TV customers asked about lower cost service bundles in the first quarter--a 3 percent increase over the same time last year.

The report also said that 20 percent of U.S. households would like to bundle voice, video and data services in the next six months.

The bad news is that subscribers are following this course to save money-which means they're paying less on their monthly bills. On average, Centris found that monthly savings ranged about $20 and that AT&T (NYSE: T), Verizon (NYSE: VZ), Cox and Cablevision Systems (NYSE: CVC) subscribers expect to save more than those with other TV service providers.
