Google TV's O'Malley touts t-commerce capability of connected TVs
TVs with broadband connections will allow more viewers to buy products with the click of a remote control, Google TV (Nasdaq: GOOG) director of content Donagh O'Malley said Monday.
"It's time to unleash the power of the Web on TV," O'Malley said at the MIPCOM conference in Cannes, France, according to New Media Age. While Google TV hasn't seen significant sales of its set-tops, which are manufactured by Logitech, and TVs embedded with Google TV software from Sony, O'Malley suggested there is a mass market for connected TVs. He compared the company's business model for Google TV and connected TVs to the smartphone business.
"Everyone in the value chain benefited following smartphone mass adoption. We like that business model and we want to replicate it for the connected TV space. This is what we want for Google TV," he said.
Cable operators, which compete with Google TV, are also beginning to expand into t-commerce. Cable overbuilder SureWest (Nasdaq: SURW) recently launched a t-commerce app from SeaChange (Nasdaq: SEAC), and Canoe Ventures has also said that it will expand into offering t-commerce ads through its interactive TV platform.
