Intel gobbles up Texas Instruments' cable modem business

Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) plans to acquire Texas Instruments' (NYSE: TXN) cable modem product line and roll it into its own DOCSIS system on a chip (SoC) technology as part of a new silicon package for cable set-top box vendors.

The objective of the acquisition, Intel said in a news release, is to give cable OEMs an "open and powerful platform for delivering innovative and differentiated products to service providers." Those products, supposedly, will run on SoC-based products using Intel's Atom processors.

"This acquisition specifically strengthens Intel's product offerings for the continuum of cable gateway products and reinforces Intel's continued commitment to the cable industry," said Bob Ferreira, general manager of the cable segment of Intel's Digital Home Group in what is obviously a prepared statement for a news release since no one really speaks that way.
