Not to distract from all the chatter around The Cable Show in Los Angeles this week, but international cable operator (for now?) Liberty Global said it's going to work with Samsung, Intel, NDS and Nagravision to create a new multimedia home gateway device for digital TV.

The device will be all-IP so it can distribute video, voice and data to multiple video displays. It will also have a user interface that seamlessly integrates video content, widgets, applications and advanced search and recommendation to "forever change how our customers experience digital TV and IP-based content," the company said.

Samsung will build the new gateway and it will be powered by the Intel Atom CE media processor. NDS will provide the middleware and Nagravision will chip in with conditional access. To make things even neater, the gateway will support both MoCA and DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance).

Lucky Europeans will get their first taste of the device early next year.
