Manassas turning off broadband power line

What came in with a flash of lightning has gone out with a distant roll of thunder in Manassas, Va., where the city government has voted unanimously to shut down its Broadband over Power Line (BPL) Internet service, forcing 520 residential and business users to look elsewhere for an ISP as of July 1 when the city-run service goes dark.

The service, once hailed as "the most successful BPL deployment in the nation" was bleeding money and losing subscribers at $24.95 a month. "It's not a good product. The whole business is not financially sound and it never has been," said City Councilman Jonathan Way, making the motion that spelled the end of the experiment.
