MobiTV targets cable MSOs with TV Everywhere solution
MobiTV, which already distributes video from cable networks to mobile phone providers such as Verizon Wireless, Sprint (NYSE: S) and AT&T (NYSE: T), is now targeting cable MSOs with a TV Everywhere solution.
The company says its cloud-based platform could be used to power TVE products for cable, satellite and IPTV providers. "By pre-packaging all the necessary components--content ingestion, technology platform, device integration and DRM support--we've taken what's typically a very complex and expensive project for a TV operator and made it simple, affordable, and easy to launch," MobiTV president Paul Scanlan said in Thursday's announcement.
While MobiTV has rights deals with major content suppliers such as Viacom (NYSE: VIA) and Disney (NYSE: DIS) which could allow pay TV distributors to offer video from networks like ESPN or MTV to subscribers on mobile devices, it will be challenging for the company to hook major cable MSOs.
Cable MSOs such as Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) and Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) already have longstanding relationships with TV networks, and it's more likely that those MSOs will eventually expand those contracts to allow for live distribution of video on mobile on devices such as Apple's iPad and possibly mobile phones.
