Rovi moves more deeply into IPTV by acquiring Sonic Solutions

Only the federal government takes this time of the year off. When it comes to corporate activity, the holidays are a hotbed of deals, not the least of which is Rovi's announcement that it will pay $720 million to take over Sonic Solutions and consequently, expand its IP-based capabilities.

The combined company will add Sonic's video digital video software and online service to Rovi's existing television infrastructure to produce what might become an attractive solutions for over-the-top players.

"By joining forces with Rovi we will provide the industry with a broad range of solutions that strengthens our customers' ability to compete as consumers' primary source for digital entertainment," said Sonic Solutions President-CEO Dave Habiger in a news release. This means, he added, enables Sonic's Hollywood studio partners to "market their content broadly."
