Rovi signs Charter, sells tech to Irdeto
Interactive programming guide developer Rovi Corp. has made a lot of news in the last year or so about its corporate acquisitions, but this week makes headlines for perhaps its most significant partnership deal yet. Rovi announced that its Total Guide technology will be marketed and distributed by cable TV operator Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR). The Total Guide software platform acts as a content library integrated with Internet search functions and recommendation engine capabilities.
Multichannel News reported that Charter currently has no plans to use the technology itself, aside from making it available to consumers.
Separately this week, Rovi also said it had sold its Blu-ray BD+ content security technology to Irdeto for about $25 million. The sale comes after Rovi has recently been seen as an acquirer, having bought companies like Sonic and DigiForge, while being mentioned as one of many possible candidates to acquire TiVo.
