Samsung Electronics America has captured 61 percent of the U.S. market for 3D TV sets, according to NPD Group. The figure is based on unit sales and dollar volume for the period between May 22 to June 18.

Broadcasting & Cable reports that the data builds on Samsung's success in April to May period, when Samsung had more than 50 percent of the market. Other media outlets have been reporting recently that Samsung had sharply lowered the cost of its active shutter 3D TV glasses. Cost of glasses has often been eyed as a hurdle to broader consumer adoption of 3D TV, and the cable TV companies and other service providers banking on the new technology would be glad for any move that jump-starts 3D TV sales.
