SanDisk (Nasdaq: SNDK) and NDS are using the IBC 2010 show (and we're using almost the whole alphabet, so hang on) to demonstrate a set-top box (STB) with DVR-like (and the key word is like) functionality.

The companies said the box has just enough storage capability to let service providers introduce features like live-pause and VoD, some home networking functionality and, of course, advanced advertising. since it's important to be green, the boxes will also be less energy consumptive.

The box becomes a reality--and for cable operators a possibility--because it combines SanDisk's flash memory cards and solid state drive (SSD) technology with NDS' STB software giving "operators a low power and reliable alternative to conventional hard disk drives, enabling a new market segment," Jonathan Beavon, NDS's director of segment marketing said in a news release.
