Sandvine helps cable manage bandwidth even as net neutrality debate roils

Sandvine, undeterred by any potential restrictions on how cable operators manage their bandwidth, has released the latest version of its traffic management technology.

The Fairshare Traffic Management solution has DOCSIS 3.0 CMTS interoperability, enhanced abilities to address and manage networks based on applications, subscribers, time of day and congestion awareness, advanced reporting tools, and what it calls "sophisticated and customizable congestion management policies that operate only when and where they are needed."

The FCC, which is pushing the concept of an unrestricted Internet with open access for all--or net neutrality--might have different ideas about the Sandvine system. Nevertheless, the new product is only an upgrade to a traffic management system that was launched in 2008 and is being used by more than 30 service providers including Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA).
