SCTE Cable-Tec Expo: Spirent advances cable testing tools

Noting the increasing need for cable operators to provide Quality of Service and reliability to business customers, Spirent Communications has expanded its signal testing product suite to include a new application that it says "allows field engineers and technicians to confidently assure the quality of the advanced cable broadband services" including those based on DOCSIS 3.0 platforms.

The products are intended to "improve operational efficiencies within the MSO test center space as they work to go beyond their core business ... into a more competitive space of Ethernet business services," Darren Pralle, product line manager at Spirent told FierceCable.

Cable, he said, is a bit of a different play for the traditionally telco-focused vendors.

"The architecture tends to be a little bit different" since cable is coming into the space with more IP focus than traditional telcos that are migrating from TDM to IP. "You also have a different operational model within the MSO space; more focused on consumer grade video as opposed to POTS services," Pralle said.

Spirent is taking these factors into account just as cable migrates to a more aggressive commercial business space and "need the visibility" of a new suite of testing products, he said. "They have to differentiate themselves somehow with an increase in quality without increasing their operational expenses."
