SCTE demos hybrid power backup prototype system
The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) along with CommScope and Alpha Technologies (OTC: AHAG.PK) have deployed a pilot installation of a new hybrid power backup prototype system that could keep cable business customers' phone and Internet service running for at least five days during a lengthy power outage.
The pilot installation was deployed at the SCTE headquarters in Exton, Pa., and links a CommScope-supplied hydrogen fuel cell system with a 48-panel solar array, batteries and control system supplied by Alpha Technologies. The design of the system means that if a power grid goes out of commission, the hybrid backup system would rely on batteries that are charged by the solar array and the fuel cells at alternating times.
The SCTE's Sustainability Management Subcommittee is planning to unveil drafts of its first two energy and power management standards at its Sept. 15 meeting in Dallas.
