The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers' Sustainability Management Subcommittee (SMS) is planning to unveil drafts of its first two energy and power management standards at its Sept. 15 meeting in Dallas.

The draft standards include SMS 001, which has been proposed as the standard for "Recommended Energy Conservation, Sustainability and Efficiency Practices for Critical Systems," and SMS 002, the proposed standards document for "Product Environmental Requirements for Cable Telecommunications Facilities" that addresses such considerations as temperature, humidity, electromagnetic interference and environmental design.

The meeting will follow the SCTE's Sept. 14 semiannual Smart Energy Management Initiative (SEMI) forum in Dallas. It comes at a time when service providers across all segments of the telecom industry are taking a long, hard look at how sustainability and power reduction practices can benefit their bottom line costs. The work that SCTE members do now will affect the equipment developed by their vendors and put into use in the coming years.
