Segway inventor Dean Kamen to speak at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo opener

Inventor Dean Kamen will speak at the opening general session at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo in Orlando, the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers said Wednesday.

Best known for inventing the Segway scooter, Kamen is expected to focus on the potential cable operators have to offer subscribers telemedicine services during a his Oct. 17 appearance. Kamen, who also invented the insulin pump and other biotech devices, is scheduled to speak during a Q&A session with Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) CTO Mike LaJoie.

"The keynote will include discussion of how forward-looking medical innovations and cable's advanced broadband networks can be integrated in next-generation e-medicine and healthcare solutions, and how DEKA's development of the Stirling Engine can enable cable to provide powering capabilities from the network edge," SCTE said.

The opening general session will also feature a panel focused on mid-sized cable operators that will include executives from Armstrong communications, BendBroadband, Buckeye Cablevision and Massillon Cable TV.
