Shaw to test 1 Gbps speeds on FTTH network

Canadian telecommunications giant Shaw Communications will use a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network in Vancouver and Calgary as the conduit for Internet speeds up to 1 Gbps.

Currently Shaw is offering what it calls "Nitro Internet Service" using DOCSIS 3.0 technology in several Canadian markets, but that "only" delivers speeds up to 100 Mbps, 10 times less than the new FTTH trial. The MSO plans to deliver the speeds to residential and small and midsized business customers.

In other Shaw news, Goldman Sachs Group has challenged an Ontario judge's decision to let Shaw gain control of Canwest Global Communications' television assets. In February, Canwest's board OK'd a $95 million offer from Shaw for a 20 percent stake and 80 percent voting interest. Goldman, which is backing a rival offer, maintains the judge's decision threatens to nullify terms of a shareholder agreement it has with Canwest.
