Streaming mad: AT&T sets DSL, U-Verse bandwidth caps

The free ride is over for AT&T DSL and U-Verse subscribers. Starting May 2, the carrier confirmed it will impose a monthly 150GB DSL data usage cap and a 250GB U-Verse cap. Subscribers will be charged an additional $10 for every 50GB (and it's assumed, any part of that) beyond those limits.

The carrier has instituted an early warning system similar to the one cable operators use to tell subscribers that they're reaching their limits--issuing alarms at 60 percent, 90 percent and 100 percent usage.

The caps are aimed at the heaviest of users, AT&T said, noting that "less than 2 percent of our Internet customers could be impacted by this approach." Those users "are using a disproportionate amount of bandwidth," AT&T said.
