The annual Allen & Co. conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, this week reportedly will be a venue for much navel-gazing by media moguls. Instead of talking about the newest Internet-based threat or potential partner to merge, The Wall Street Journal says the C-level conference goers are more likely to talk about how to keep their traditional businesses from fading as they look to milk dollars from new initiatives.

If Sun Valley attendees really settle in and talk about how to save cable TV, that would be something, considering they have gradually come to adopt "broadband service provider" as their primary identity. For the most part, they have written off pay TV cord-cutting as a passing response to economic problems, but if they can start to bring in more money from 3DTV, video-on-demand and new applications, perhaps they can afford to.
