"We appear to be recovering from a large but brief Internet outage affecting most of our service areas. Please attempt to connect again," Time Warner Cable wrote at about 10 a.m. ET on a Twitter account that is maintained by its customer service team.

New England subscribers also lost phone service, according to a report in The Bangor Daily News. The outage generated coverage in national news outlets, including CNET and PC Magazine.

Time Warner Cable officials didn't immediately respond to a request for comment Monday regarding questions about what caused the outage.
