Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) subscribers who buy a connected TV from Samsung can now watch video-on-demand programming without using a cable set-top, the MSO said Wednesday.

More than two years after unveiling its connected TV plans with Samsung at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show, Time Warner Cable said its TWC TV app is available on Smart TVs that Samsung shipped in 2012 and 2013. Time Warner Cable has also launched the app on Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Xbox 360, PCs and Roku's streaming video set-tops. Subscribers will be able to watch live TV programming on Samsung TVs by the end of the year, a Time Warner Cable spokesperson said.

Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) executives said in June that the MSO is working with Samsung to deliver an Xfinity app to connected TVs, and Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) has also demonstrated an Optimum app for Samsung TVs at cable conventions.

Integrating the TWC TV app with consumer electronics devices could help Time Warner Cable reduce capital spending on set-tops. CEO Glenn Britt has predicted that set-tops will eventually become extinct and said the MSO supports the idea of subscribers using CE interfaces to access its pay TV content.

"If somebody wants to use the interface that comes with one device or another, that's fine. We're going to continue to have ours. If there's a better one--as long as they [subscribers] buy video from us--I don't care," Britt said on an earnings call in August 2012.

Time Warner Cable is scheduled to report second-quarter earnings on Thursday.
