Time Warner Cable ordered to stop fiber optic claims

The National Advertising Review Board (NARB) of the Council of Better Business Bureaus has agreed with Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and told Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC-WI) to stop saying it operates fiber networks.

TWC's advertised claims that it "uses fiber optics for transmission throughout its entire networks" and that this "represents the highest level of technology currently used by consumer telecommunications service providers" are "unsupported," the NARB decision said.

Time Warner Cable, of course, disagreed with the decision and said it inhibited the MSO's ability to differentiate its services. Verizon, of course, agreed with the decision, noting in a statement that "Cable companies say the darndest things" and "the truth is they can't honestly make those claims."
