The ads are designed to educate cable and satellite subscribers about the ability to access online video content. A limited number of pay TV customers are aware that they can watch complete episodes from hit cable series on the Web and through Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad and iPhone and smartphones running Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android platform. Turner may be able to spark interest in TVE sites and mobile apps by running ads during such high-profile programs as its coverage of the Major League Baseball playoffs.
Turner is including the same commercials that run in programs it airs on TBS and TNT in videos that it runs on its site and through mobile applications. Nielsen will include viewing data from TV viewing and subscribers who watch Turner content online or through mobile devices in its ratings reports for TBS and TNT.
Turner has deals with most pay TV providers that allow subscribers to access online and mobile video from TNT and TBS, including Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV), Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH), Cablevision (NYSE: CVC), Verizon (NYSE: VZ) FiOS and AT&T (NYSE: T) U-verse. But it still doesn't have a rights deal with its former corporate sibling Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC).
In addition to running 30-second TV spots touting its TVE efforts, Turner is plugging its mobile apps at the top of its TBS.com and TNT.TV websites.
