TWC-funded study gauges bandwidth consumption of smart refrigerators, light bulbs
A study on bandwidth consumption that Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) is funding includes a look at how much data devices such as smart refrigerators and light bulbs demand, according to a YouTube video posted by TWC this week.
Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly) professor Justin Cappos, who is leading the study on bandwidth consumption, said it analyzes how much bandwidth is consumed by both online video sites such as Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) and smart home devices. Cappos notes subscribers connected to home automation services could have RFID (radio frequency identification) chips laced on light bulbs, cereal boxes and even egg cartons. A smart refrigerator would be able to look at that data and suggest a homeowner could make an omelet for dinner in order to use eggs before they expire. "The number of egg cartons you would need in a household to cause a bandwidth concern would be hundreds of thousands," Cappos added.
TWC didn't release the research report Cappos conducted for the company, but Cappos discussed his overall findings in the video. "Certain technologies that have been bandied about as being potentially very impactful in fact may not be, at least not for the average home user in a way that Time Warner wouldn't expect," Cappos said.
Time Warner Cable said last month that it would donate $1.6 million to fund research at the NYC Media Lab, including the bandwidth consumption study.
