Tweet delivered using white space spectrum in Cambridge Consultants' U.K. trial

It could turn out to be the tweet heard ‘round the world. Cambridge Consultants confirmed that it successfully sent a tweet in unused white space spectrum as part of a U.K.-based trial, proving, it said, the viability of the unused broadcast spectrum as a source of wireless spectrum in rural areas.

The tweet was sent in Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, a community that was selected because of its lack of wireless provision and availability of spectrum, according to Richard Traherne, head of wireless at Cambridge Consultants, who went on to rave about the potential of using the unused spectrum between TV channels for wireless in rural areas.

"We believe that white space, as a pioneering cognitive radio wireless technology, has the potential to change the way that people communicate, especially in rural areas," he said in what can't be construed as an understatement. "It has a wide range of applications, from healthcare to home working, and we expect to see these and other exciting applications emerge in the near future."
