Tyco Electronics, which has for the most part been sitting on the sidelines of the cable business, moved a step closer by agreeing to spend $1.25 billion for ADC. On the surface, the combined company will at least add ADC's increasingly important Distributed Antenna System (DAS) technology and products to the Tyco Electronics wireless connectivity portfolio; at the most it will enhance Tyco Electronics' position as a player in the emerging TV Everywhere space.

Tyco Electronics CEO Tom Lynch said as much in a news release announcing the deal, noting that "consumers and enterprises want access to high-speed video and data wherever they are, on whatever devices they are using-from smart phones to HD and 3D televisions or computers with advanced videoconferencing capabilities."

ADC, according to chairman/president/CEO Robert Switz, speaking in the same release, has a "strong heritage of providing innovative wired and wireless solutions that have enabled the expansion of advanced broadband networks worldwide."
